명사의 복수형어미는 복수를 나타내는 수사가 앞에 온다고 해서 반드시 -s를 붙이는 것은 아닙니다. 사실 복수형을 써야 하는지 아닌지 고민이 되는 경우가 종종 있는데 원칙을 모르게 되면 실수를 많이 합니다. 2014년 수능 영어에서도 보듯이 문법에 대한 자세한 이해가 기본적인 실력으로 자리잡고 있지 않으면 난해한 예문들을 이해하기란 쉽지 않다는 것을 느꼈을 것입니다.
● 명사의 복수형 어미
● 수사와 함께 쓰이는 단위명사는 복수형 어미를 붙이지 않는다
단위명사가 형용사처럼 명사를 수식할 때는 명사형 어미인 -s를 붙이지 않습니다. 자체의 명사의 의미를 강조하기 보다는 뒤의 명사를 수식해 주는 입장이기 때문에 복수형 어미를 붙인다는 것은 의미가 없는 것이죠.
She is three years old. 그녀는 세살이다. [수사+복수형명사]
He has a three-year-old son. 그는 세살박이 아들이 있다.[three-year-old 복합형용사]

● 「명사+명사」에서 앞의 명사가 뒤의 명사를 수식하는 형용사 역할을 할 경우
a vegetables garden (X) / a vegetable garden(O) 야채밭[명사+명사]

● 수사 + [dozen, score, hundred, thousand, percent]s
수사 다음에 dozen, score, hundred, thousand, percent 가 오면 복수를 나타내는 수사라고 하더라도 -s를 붙이지 않습니다. 자주 틀리는 것이기 때문에 확실하게 익혀두시기 바랍니다.(★)
① one dozen[1다스] / three dozen[3다스]
② one hundred[100] / five hundred[500]
③ three score and ten[70]
④ one thousand[1,000] / four thousand[4,000]

※ 5℃ → 5 degrees / 10년→ decade , 30년→ 3 decades
⑦ dozen, score, hundred, thousand, percent 가 막연한 수를 나타낼 경우 → "+ 복수명사"

● 「pair, couple」등이 짝을 나타낼 때에는 단수, 복수 모두 가능
① two pair(s) of shoes 구두 두 켤레[pair, pairs 모두 가능]
② four couple(s) of hounds 4쌍의 사냥개[couple, couples 모두 가능]
③ five head of oxen 소 5마리/ 소 5두(頭) [head는 항상 단수형(★)]
